Bioverse Labs is empowering indigenous communities to preserve natural resources and identify economically-important tree species that can be sustainably managed and harvested. The solution uses drone imagery and machine learning to identify and map non-timber species of trees (e.g., chestnut, copaiba, and Brazil nuts) that are economically viable for supporting traditional modes of generating income. These datasets will be incorporated into machine learning algorithms for the automatic detection of economically-viable tree species for sustainable management of natural resources for local communities and agro-forestry cooperatives. The solution also lays the foundation for a more prosperous future for the communities’ youngest members.
During the 12-month investment period the company will focus on building a species detector to identify tree species/habitat type classification; collecting and share and sharing drone imagery that accounts for seasonal variation in vegetation; developing training materials for use of mapping results within communities Bioverse operates; and creating dissemination materials to showcase impact.
