UNICEF Innovation explored whether Vojo is suitable to support youth participatory initiatives in South Africa, and what changes would need to be made to the technology in order to improve its relevance in a South African youth context. Vojo is a mobile-phone based storytelling application that allows users from all over the world to share and post stories about their lives, situations, challenges and triumphs through voice messages, SMS and MMS. It can also be used via landline phone for those who do not have access to a mobile phone. The pilot's finding confirmed that Vojo had the potential as a tool to increase youth engagement through an additional channel, provided adaptations were made to suit the context and specific needs of young people.
